Stumbled upon this video by chance, and ended up watching the whole thing. Guess it mainly caught my interest as I'm preparing for an AFF instructor's course myself and also because I've jumped at both of these DZs recently… And I must say, I'm shocked at what I saw in this video…. First of all, level 1 is a downright fail, the student fails to pull and the instructor ends up pulling for him. I guess the student may have re-taken level 1 and that jump could be excluded from the video, I don't know? If not, the instructors are not doing their job properly. Anyway, in level 3 there's only one instructor, and on the left side instead of the right, which I find bizarre. Again, perhaps the student made some jumps in the meantime, I don't know? In level 4 the instructor let's the student do a solo exit which is not the norm until level 6 and should not be done in this case since the student isn't particularly stable. In levels 5 and 6 it is completely overcast and I must say it's quite irresponsible to take a student out for an AFF jump in such conditions. In levels 6 and 7 the student does not show the ability to do a stable track for more than a couple of seconds, yet it seems that he passes those levels. I can't believe this is the modus operandi for French instructors (at least they sounded French), anyway it's a total fail on their part in my opinion and a very poor example of how an AFF course should be executed. Gotta give the student one thing though… nice landings!…

Sick Jumps dude!! Your instructors seemed really cool. Just wondering as I'm doing my AFF soon, obviously seeing new skydivers do manoeuvres they seem very light and on the verge of 'Out of control' at certain points, but experienced jumpers seem completely in control. Does anyone know what kind of techniques you need to stay steady and controlled? Just as hindsight thanks 🙂

Thanks for the video really helps!

I did a tandem jump decades ago. My only jump. May do another, but probably not go for the solos.

    Now for the dumb questions:

How does the student learn parachute maneuvers? Do they first do tandem in learning to control the canopy to landing? Also, how are they trained to know (in the unlikely event) to break away from a bad canopy and open the reserve? Obviously, you can't train by actually being in that situation. Seems a lot to learn, and the student would need to be competent in all the above beginning with Level 1.

I'm open to all comments. Thanks.
